Is your Radiography team thriving…or just surviving?

It’s a question more departments need to ask and answer honestly because right now, too many radiography teams are stuck in survival mode. So how do you know if your team is thriving or surviving? It starts by asking:

Is your department constantly or chronically understaffed?
Is burnout and emotional exhaustion brushed off as “part of the job”?
Are sickness and staff turnover rates high?
Are opportunities for growth, development or progression limited?
Does morale feel flat or fragile?
Are there communication breakdowns and team tension?
Is patient care becoming more transactional (process driven) than personal?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then there is a good chance your team is operating in survival mode. And it doesn’t just wear down staff, it affects patient care, service quality and compromises practice standards.

Now, contrast that with a team that’s thriving:

Staffing levels are designed to support both performance and wellbeing, not just the achievement of targets.
Every team member feels listened to, appreciated, and supported.
There’s dedicated time for personal and professional growth, learning and mentoring.
There’s a healthy team dynamic and workplace culture where all staff feel motivated, connected and valued.
Patients are cared for by professionals who are warm, engaged and proud of the work they do.

Thriving isn’t about being perfect - it’s about having a culture that cares, adapts, and uplifts. It’s about creating a workplace where people can both do, and feel, well.

So how do we move from surviving to thriving?
What actions make a radiography team thrive…and what might be holding them back?
Let’s start the conversation.
Let’s swap stories, ideas, and wins—no matter how small.
Because surviving shouldn’t be the norm!
